FREE ICE CREAM & Live Music at the Northland Mega Sale!
- Chris Dias
Imagine my surprise when, upon hearing about the Mega Sale this week at CN Centre, that its return was unexpected. I assumed it had been a tradition as time-honored as the Father’s Day Show ‘N Shine, Northern FanCon, and spring pothole filling. I may not always attend the Mega Sale, but I appreciated its reliability, of knowing it will be there when I need it.
And one year I did when I purchased a vehicle myself from the sale. Three years later, that same month at the same place, I acquired my latest and longest owned vehicle. I just assumed June was the time of the Mega Sale. Little did I know that 2017 was the last year it ran.
“In truth, Northland never wanted to leave,” Says Kyle Bachman from Northland Dodge. “We’ve always been a fan of it because it’s the best place to cross an import and a domestic shopper. It gives them one place to see new inventory.”
The concept of a one-stop location for numerous automobile brands isn’t a foreign one. Most large cities offer what is referred to as an “Auto-Mall” where dealers plant their lots. In Calgary, their largest complex boasts cars from Nissan, Chrysler, Mitsubishi, Bentley, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, Ford, Mini, Hyundai, and Kia. When the June Mega Sale occurs in Prince George, it is the largest collection of cars for sale in Northern BC. However, attention to the event fell by the wayside, and it failed to materialize in 2018. Now Northland is back to rebuild as the Northland Mega Sale and demonstrate its success, and they have basic economic theory to prove their case.
For all you business students out there, Microeconomics 101 was mandatory, and a tenet of that class was Hotelling's Law, which stated that stores selling similar products will often migrate to another to improve their total penetration in a community. This explains those city blocks with coffee shops at every corner or food trucks sharing one location along a beach. This mega sale has already proven successful, hoping to demonstrate to other dealers not taking part to return next year.
To coincide with the Northland Mega Sale, participating dealers are offering incentives, up to an including FREE ICE CREAM from Frozen Paddle for even saying “HELLO” to a salesman between 2pm and 6pm on Thursday June 27 (I plan on chatting up a storm). Of course, there are other enticements including free concert featuring live music from local rock band GOOD JUJU (on Saturday June 29 at 1pm!), reduced prices, lower interest, and a trip for 2 to Las Vegas, but I’m going for the ice cream.
The Northland Mega Sale, offering hundreds of new vehicles, runs until June 30th at the CN Center Parking Lot. Admission is free.
